| Born in Launceston Tasmania in 1956, art was always a driving force in Edwards life from the time he could hold a pencil. Although a good scholar with top grades he was discouraged by his parents from seeking a career in art teaching despite achieving the highest ever practical mark in art at Matriculation College. Instead Edward began work at 17 years of age as a trainee ticket writer with a local department store. It wasnt long before he changed positions to that of junior visual merchandiser. Over the following 20 years his employment path would swing from graphic design and illustrating to visual merchandising with almost monotonous regularity. Edward reached the position of National Visual Merchandising Manager for the Sussan clothing store chain in the mid 1980's. There he was responsible for the total look of over 180 stores throughout Australia. Married at 21 and divorced less than 2 years later he travelled and lived in New Zealand and England before returning to Australia and settling in Melbourne in 1981. In 1985 and 1986 Edward entered miniature oil paintings in the Canadian Del Bello International Exhibition. Both times he sold work however it was difficult to find the time and enthusiasm for painting when his principal employment was illustrating literally day and night. An interest in costume design developed and for almost 10 years Edward designed and made spectacular creations mostly for personal wear and won many local and international awards. In 1996 Edward sold his home and half built studio in Brunswick to the prominent Australian artist Kristin Headlam and he moved to Glenorchy, Victoria. Here, in the former Royal Mail Hotel circa 1861, he shared his love of art with his life partner and their family of 7 curly coated Murray River Retrievers. Edward operated Dyas Fine Art Galleries in the nearby town of Stawell for 12 months however it was far too time consuming. In 1997 Edward commenced work on miniatures in graphite pencil. A series of male nudes, Angels sold well and won Edward his first drawing prize. The technique has been improved to create a photo realist quality which has won international awards. Edward became a member of the Australian miniature society ASMA(Qld) in 1997 and won his 5th consecutive Best of Show award at their international exhibition in 2004. Four times winner of the Faber-Castell Award for Drawing Excellence in miniature art, twice at national level and twice at international level, Edward has the advantage over many gifted artists that he is so versatile. This versatility won him the Best of Show award at the inaugural international exhibition of the Canadian Miniature Society in 2001. Working in graphite pencil, pastel, oil, gouache and mixed media he is able to do justice to almost any subject although his principal choice is figurative and portraiture. A pastel portrait fraught with technical difficulty won Edward the coveted Gold Memorial Bowl award at the 2001 Royal Miniature Society annual exhibition. Winning Best of Show at the MASF International Miniature Exhibition 2002 in Florida USA with the oil Statuesque also gained inclusion in the MASF |
