15 x 21 inch pastel.
Getting the colours and textures right on Protea is incredibly difficult. They are so waxy that they look artificial at the best of times and the colours are muted, almost dirty. I liken the experience to getting Mother of Pearl looking right. I did my best and I'm more than happy with the result.

Wow! Don't remember if or when I've seen someone with that much skill in that medium. Bravo!

Beautiful! Hard to believe 'tis pastel, what with all the gorgeous detail on it! I imagine this took a lot of work. Since you do a lot of work with pastel, what is your viewpoint on fixative? Each pastel artist seems to have their own opinion on it, and I see its usefulness except that even I can see that it ruins some of the colors on the lighter areas.

I love pastel, but I'm afraid I'm not as good with it as I would like to be! Do you use hard or soft pastels, or a mixture of both? And I don't know if I've asked before or not, but a tutorial from you on how you make your paintings would be a veritable boon from heaven.

I am an advocate of fixative but not on final highlights. I use a mixture of soft and hard.
Sorry, I don't write tutorials and I am reluctant to teach privately again which upsets the locals.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about the decidedly non-tutorial status. :-( Also, the weirdness of some people . . . Are you not a "native" to the area where you live, then? Still, if I knew there was somebody who could teach great art in my area I'd attend lessons no matter where they happened to hail from. 0.o

Then again, I my family is considered an "import" to Eastern KY where I live as well (even though we've been here over fifteen years) so I sort of understand. Everyone knows everyone else and if they're not related somehow or friends with someone's parents/grandparents it's a miracle-- they know it if they're third cousins twice removed and who's granddaddy sold moonshine, and it's a smaller, more insular community than in CA where my parents grew up. Although we've finally got a Super Walmart . . . *shakes head.*
